Printing: Part Two
Once you have done your test strip you can do a full print.
Prints will usually dry fairly quickly in natural air.
To make a full print.
Follow the steps as before using the best result from your test strip. You will need to take into account the following:
*Use the easels for consistent framing. With larger prints the easel will also keep your paper flat.
*Focus the enlarger on a piece of paper - you should be able to see the grain of the film. (We have a focus magnifier tool if your eyesight is not so good.)
*Prints dry a little darker than they appear when wet.
*All the enlargers are slightly different so try to use the same one each time.
*Keep your fingers dry - if you have developer or fixer on your fingers you will get a finger print on your print.
*Take care of your negatives - finger prints and scratches really showup!
* You may wish to dodge or burn in areas. This is achieved by masking with your hard or cardboard areas that you want to remain lighter (dodging), or allowing longer exposure to areas that you want darker (burning in). Move your hand or the card around rapidly but slightly or you will get a hard edge.
* You may need to take into account other factors such as where the print will be displayed or if you are going to tone it. (Sepia tone for example, information on this will apear soon.).
* Be aware of the people around you.
* Enjoy...
The paper you are using is usually bright pearl finish, on a plastic base, but sometimes gloss is the only finish available. VCE student may also wish to use a fibre based paper, or a paper with a warm tone. See the Head of Media for details.
